[Interview] The Frights

Vor ihren Konzerten in Deutschland konnten wir Mikey von the Frights für euch fragen, was er sich von den deutschen Shows erhofft. Dabei gibt euch einen kleinen Einblick in das Bandleben und erzählt euch noch einiges mehr!

Who are you and what is your part in the band?

My name is Mikey Carnevale and I play guitar and sing in The Frights.

How do you create your music, what's the process behind it?

I've tried to make my song writing process less sloppy as we've been growing over the years and I think I've finally got to a point that I'm comfortable with. I write the song on an acoustic guitar starting with vocal melody. Once I have a skeleton with a melody and a guitar part, I'l work on lyrics. Then I'll record a demo and bring it to the band and see what we're all thinking.

What do you expect from the upcoming german shows?

I have no idea to be honest. We've never been there so we have no expectations. It's really exciting and kind of scary. But we'll see.

This is your first album on Epitaph, is there a specific story behind the collaboration? Did they ask you or did you get in touch with them?

I'm not sure how the connection was made exactly but they expressed that they were interested and we were very very stoked that they were even thinking about us. Great label.

Is there a certain message you want to transfer with your music? Does it have a special purpose ?

The songs are sometimes pretty personal so any connection that kids can take from them is a bonus to me. I don't try to push any message on people because some times it doesn't connect and that's okay. People feel things differently. The songs are an extension of myself and our band and sometimes that reaches other people. I guess that's the point. That in the off chance you can relate to what I'm saying, I take that as a win.

What is important for you while making music?

The most important thing to me is lyrics and melody. It used to be just melody. And the lyrics came by the wayside but nowadays I realize it's important to match a good melody with better lyrics. If the two can play off each other to service a song that's when you get something special. It's all about whatever services the song, to me.

Which of your song is the most fun to play on stage?

I like playing whatever is the newest. Right now I'm having a fun time playing Hold Me Down.

Do you have a favourite tattoo and why?

Haha! Hm. I have 5 stripes on my right bicep that I think might be favorite. People ask about that one the most.

Do you have a favourite videogame and why?

I'm playing Red Dead 2 right now and it is insane. I've never played a game with this much detail and characters. But I also love the Uncharted series. Very special place in my heart haha.

What  is your favourite band at the moment?

At the moment, Wilco. I got into them about a year and a half ago. Jeff Tweedy is one of the best song writers I've ever listened to. Lyrically I can't even believe half of what he come up with.

Any last words?

Stoked to get out there I think we're all very excited to drink a lot of beer and get this thing going. Thanks!
